The Arothron manilensis, commonly known as the Giant White-Spotted Puffer, is a fascinating addition to any large marine aquarium. This extra large specimen displays distinctive white spots on a dark body, making it a visually striking inhabitant.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially towards smaller or slow-moving fish. Best kept with robust tank mates that can tolerate its inquisitive nature. Avoid housing with small invertebrates or delicate species as it may nip or consume them.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for hard-shelled foods such as molluscs, crustaceans, and snails. Supplement diet with meaty marine fare and occasional vegetable matter to maintain health and prevent beak overgrowth.
Tank Requirements: Due to its size and activity level, a minimum tank size of 300 litres is recommended. Provide ample hiding places and a secure lid as puffers are known to be escape artists.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG, and pH 8.1-8.4. Moderate water flow and good filtration are essential to ensure water quality.
Additional Care: Regular monitoring of beak length is important to prevent overgrowth. Provide hard-shelled foods to naturally wear down the beak. This species is not reef safe and should be kept in fish-only or fish-with-live-rock setups.
