Dendrochirus biocellatus, commonly referred to as the Fu Manchu Lionfish, is a captivating scorpionfish species prized for its ornate fins and distinctive facial tentacles. This medium to large specimen can add a dramatic focal point to a mature marine aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-established tank.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but predatory. It is best kept with similarly sized or larger tank mates that are not small enough to be considered prey. Avoid housing with very small or slow-moving fish. Compatibility with reef invertebrates is limited due to its predatory nature.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as live or frozen crustaceans, mysis shrimp, and small fish. Regular feeding 2-3 times per week is recommended.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is advised to provide adequate swimming space and territory.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and gentle to moderate water flow suit this species, replicating its natural reef habitat.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork and hiding places to mimic natural crevices. This offers security and ambush points for feeding.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
Additional Notes: Exercise caution when handling due to venomous spines. Always use appropriate tools when performing maintenance.
