Myripristis vittata is a visually striking squirrelfish species prized for its vibrant red and white banded body and nocturnal behaviour. Native to tropical marine environments, this species is best suited for experienced hobbyists who can provide a stable, mature aquarium setup.
Care and Husbandry: This small squirrelfish requires a minimum tank size of 150 litres to accommodate its active swimming and nocturnal habits. It thrives in a well-established tank with ample rockwork and caves to provide shelter during daylight hours. Maintaining stable water parameters typical of a reef environment is essential, including a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025, and good water quality with regular maintenance.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but shy, Myripristis vittata is best kept with other non-aggressive tank mates. It can be kept in reef aquariums with caution, as it may prey on small invertebrates. Avoid housing with overly aggressive species to reduce stress.
Diet: This species is carnivorous, feeding primarily on small crustaceans and planktonic foods. In captivity, offer a varied diet including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes formulated for carnivorous fish.
Lighting and Placement: Moderate lighting is sufficient, mimicking their natural crepuscular activity. Provide subdued lighting or shaded areas to accommodate their nocturnal nature. Position rockwork and caves to create secure hiding spots.
