Myripristis vittata, commonly known as the medium squirrelfish, is a visually captivating marine species prized for its vibrant red and white banded body. This nocturnal fish is best suited for experienced hobbyists who can provide a mature aquarium environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but shy, Myripristis vittata is compatible with other non-aggressive tank mates. It is best kept with similarly sized or larger fish to avoid stress. Avoid housing with very small or highly aggressive species.
Diet: This species is carnivorous and thrives on a diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feeding should be done in the evening or at night to align with its natural nocturnal feeding habits.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory. The aquarium should be well-decorated with live rock to offer plenty of crevices and caves for hiding during daylight hours.
Water Parameters and Environment: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH 8.1-8.4. Moderate water flow and subdued lighting replicate its natural reef habitat.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, Myripristis vittata may prey on small invertebrates or ornamental shrimps, so careful monitoring is advised in reef setups.
