The Emperor Angelfish (Pomacanthus imperator) is one of the most visually captivating marine fish available to hobbyists. Recognised by its vivid blue and yellow stripes and distinctive facial mask, this species adds a dramatic focal point to any large marine aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards other angelfish or similar-shaped species.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality marine angelfish pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, spirulina, and marine algae to ensure optimal health and vibrant colouration.
Minimum Tank Size: 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons). A large, mature tank with plenty of swimming space and hiding places is essential.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally safe with mature corals, Emperor Angelfish may nip at sessile invertebrates and soft corals, so careful monitoring is advised.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Avoid overly intense lighting to reduce stress.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement mimicking natural reef environments is ideal.
Placement: Provide ample rockwork for grazing and shelter. Position away from aggressive tank mates to reduce stress.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (16 inches) in captivity.
Due to their size and temperament, Emperor Angelfish are best suited for experienced marine aquarists with large, well-maintained tanks. Regular water changes and stable water parameters will help maintain their health and vibrant colours.
