Chaetodontoplus mesoleucus, commonly known as the Vermiculated Angelfish, is a captivating large marine angelfish prized for its intricate patterning and vibrant colours. This species is a stunning addition to mature marine aquariums, offering both beauty and a generally peaceful temperament.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in larger tanks.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including marine algae, spirulina, high-quality angelfish preparations, mysis shrimp, and other meaty foods to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 200 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate lighting supports algal growth which forms part of their diet.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef environments is ideal.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. This helps reduce stress and encourages natural behaviour.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches).
Reef Safe: With Caution. May nip at sessile invertebrates such as corals and clam mantles, so caution is advised in reef setups.
Additional Notes: Regular water quality monitoring and stable parameters are essential. Avoid aggressive tank mates and provide a varied diet to maintain vibrant colours and health.
