Siganus uspi, commonly known as a foxface rabbitfish, is a visually striking species prized for its vibrant colours and peaceful nature. This medium-sized fish is an excellent addition to a well-established marine aquarium, particularly for hobbyists seeking a herbivorous species that helps control algae growth.
Temperament and Compatibility: Siganus uspi is generally peaceful and can be kept with a variety of other non-aggressive marine fish. However, it may show territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar species, so it is best kept singly or in a large tank if multiple are desired.
Diet: This species is primarily herbivorous and thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality herbivore pellets, flakes, and occasional vegetable matter such as blanched spinach or lettuce to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and reduce stress. The aquarium should be mature with stable water parameters and plenty of live rock to graze on natural algae growth.
Reef Compatibility: Siganus uspi is considered reef safe with caution. While generally safe with corals, it may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or soft corals, so monitoring is advised.
Care Level: Moderate. Requires stable water quality, a varied herbivorous diet, and a peaceful community tank environment.
Water Parameters: Maintain temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG, and pH 8.1-8.4 for optimal health.
