Siganus vermiculatus, commonly known as the Vermiculated Rabbitfish, is a striking marine species prized for its intricate pattern and algae-eating behaviour. This medium-sized fish is an excellent choice for hobbyists seeking a peaceful herbivore to help control algae growth in their reef or fish-only marine aquariums.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, the Vermiculated Rabbitfish coexists well with other non-aggressive tank mates. It is best kept singly or in pairs to prevent territorial disputes. Avoid housing with overly aggressive species to maintain harmony.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, Siganus vermiculatus thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality herbivore pellets and occasional vegetable matter such as blanched spinach or nori sheets to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and grazing surfaces. Stable water parameters with moderate flow and good filtration are essential. Lighting should support algal growth to supplement the fish’s diet naturally.
Reef Compatibility: Reef safe with caution. While generally reef compatible, this species may nip at soft corals or polyps if insufficient algae is available. Providing ample natural or supplemental algae reduces this risk.
Origin and Size: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, the Vermiculated Rabbitfish can reach up to 25 cm in length. Regular monitoring of growth and tank conditions will ensure a healthy, thriving specimen.
