The Acanthurus xanthopterus, or Yellowfin Surgeonfish, is a visually impressive tang native to tropical and subtropical Indo-Pacific waters. This species is prized for its bright yellow pectoral fins and streamlined body, making it a standout addition to large marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Due to its size and active swimming behaviour, it is best suited for experienced hobbyists.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. While generally peaceful with other fish, it may show territorial behaviour towards similar tang species.
Diet: Omnivorous. A varied diet including marine algae, seaweed sheets, and high-quality meaty foods such as mysis shrimp and brine shrimp is recommended to maintain optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial stress.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needs.
Water Flow: Moderate to strong water movement mimics natural reef environments and supports the fish’s active lifestyle.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Ensure open swimming areas to accommodate its active nature.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 50 cm (20 inches) in length.
Reef Safety: With Caution. May nip at coral polyps and clam mantles; not recommended for delicate reef tanks.
