Acanthurus tennentii, known as Tennent’s Surgeonfish, is a visually captivating tang prized for its distinctive colouration and active behaviour. This medium-sized species is best suited to well-established marine aquariums with ample swimming space.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a mature tank environment.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive. It can be territorial towards conspecifics and other tangs, so careful consideration is needed when selecting tank mates.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Provide a varied diet rich in marine algae and seaweed, supplemented with high-quality prepared foods and occasional meaty treats to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (40 gallons) to accommodate its active swimming needs and territorial behaviour.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef compatible, it may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or corals, so monitor behaviour closely.
Lighting & Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting and moderate to strong water flow are recommended to mimic natural habitat conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Ensure open swimming areas to allow natural activity.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
Regular water changes and maintaining excellent water quality are essential for the health of this species. Avoid housing multiple tangs of the same genus unless the tank is very large and territories can be established.
