The Acanthurus japonicus is a visually captivating tang species prized for its vibrant colouration and dynamic swimming behaviour. This large tang is best suited to experienced marine aquarists who can provide ample swimming space and stable water conditions.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but territorial towards conspecifics and similar tang species. It coexists well with a variety of other fish but should be housed with caution alongside other surgeonfish to avoid aggression.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, requiring a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality prepared foods such as spirulina flakes, pellets, and occasional meaty treats to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to accommodate its active swimming and territorial nature. Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG, and good water quality with regular filtration and water changes.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, it may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or corals, so monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
