The Acanthurus leucocheilus, commonly known as the Whitecheek Surgeonfish, is a visually captivating tang prized by experienced marine aquarists. Recognisable by its prominent white cheek patch contrasting against a darker body, this species adds a bold splash of colour and dynamic movement to large reef or fish-only aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-established tank.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally semi-aggressive, the Whitecheek Surgeonfish can be territorial, especially towards conspecifics or similar tang species. It is best housed singly or in a very large aquarium with ample swimming space to reduce aggression. Compatible with other robust fish species but caution is advised when mixing with smaller, timid fish.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Provide a varied diet rich in marine algae and seaweed, supplemented with high-quality herbivore pellets and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) to accommodate its active swimming behaviour and territorial nature.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting is suitable. Moderate to strong water flow mimics natural reef currents and supports healthy respiration and waste removal.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Open swimming areas are essential for this active species.
Origin: Native to the central Pacific Ocean.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
With proper care, the Acanthurus leucocheilus can be a stunning and rewarding addition to a large marine aquarium, offering both beauty and dynamic behaviour.
