Acanthurus dussumieri, or Dussumier’s Surgeonfish, is a large and visually impressive tang that adds dynamic movement and colour to mature marine aquariums. This species is best suited for experienced hobbyists due to its size and specific care needs.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, Acanthurus dussumieri can coexist with other tangs and similarly sized fish but may show territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar species. It is compatible with a variety of reef-safe tank mates when provided with ample swimming space.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, this surgeonfish thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality herbivore flakes, pellets, and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: Due to its large adult size, a minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended, with larger volumes preferred to accommodate its active swimming habits. Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding places.
Water Parameters and Environment: Maintain stable marine conditions with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.020-1.025 SG, and moderate water flow. Lighting should support algal growth on live rock but does not require specialised intensity.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, this species may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or coral polyps, so monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
