The Thalassoma hebraicum is a medium-sized wrasse prized for its vivid colours and dynamic swimming patterns. Native to the Red Sea and adjacent waters, this species adds vibrant movement and interest to a marine aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This wrasse requires a well-maintained environment with stable water parameters and ample space to swim.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards similar-sized or shaped wrasses, so careful consideration of tank mates is essential.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with pellet or flake foods formulated for carnivorous marine fish.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 150 litres (40 gallons) to provide sufficient swimming room and reduce territorial behaviour.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef compatible, this wrasse may nip at small invertebrates or sessile animals, so monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement mimicking natural reef currents is ideal.
Placement: Mid to upper water column. Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and resting.
Origin: Red Sea region.
Maximum Size: Approximately 15 cm (6 inches).
Regular water changes and stable water chemistry are important to maintain health. Introduce this wrasse into a mature aquarium with established hiding places to reduce stress and aggression.
