The Novaculichthys taeniourus, commonly known as the rockmover wrasse, is a captivating species prized for its distinctive behaviour and striking appearance. This medium to large wrasse can grow to a substantial size, making it suitable only for well-established marine aquariums with ample space.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires a mature tank with stable water parameters and plenty of live rock for foraging and shelter.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards similar species. It is best kept singly or as a mated pair in a suitably sized aquarium.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide sufficient swimming space and territory.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, it may disturb small invertebrates and corals when foraging, so caution is advised in sensitive reef setups.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. No special lighting needs.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement to mimic natural reef conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and foraging. Ensure secure lids as wrasses are known jumpers.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches).
