The Novaculichthys taeniourus, commonly referred to as the Dragon Wrasse, is a visually captivating species prized for its distinctive elongated body and intricate patterning. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, this wrasse is a dynamic addition to larger marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards similar species or smaller, timid fish.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needed.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement to mimic natural reef environments.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and foraging. This species appreciates caves and crevices to retreat into when stressed.

Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
Reef Safe: With Caution. While generally reef compatible, it may prey on small invertebrates and crustaceans.
