Epibulus insidiator, known as the Slingjaw Wrasse, is a captivating marine fish notable for its extraordinary jaw extension used to capture prey. This small-sized specimen is perfect for marine hobbyists seeking a visually impressive and behaviourally interesting wrasse.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a mature aquarium environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally semi-aggressive; it may show territorial behaviour towards smaller or similar-sized wrasses. Best housed with other semi-aggressive or larger peaceful fish. Avoid keeping with very small, timid species.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, chopped seafood, and specialised frozen marine preparations. Regular feeding is essential to maintain health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territories. The aquarium should be well-decorated with live rock to offer hiding places and hunting grounds.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal to support the fish’s activity and health.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While not known to harm corals directly, the Slingjaw Wrasse may prey on small invertebrates, so caution is advised in reef setups.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm in length.
