Bodianus izuensis is a visually captivating wrasse species prized for its vibrant colours and dynamic behaviour. Native to the western Pacific, this species is best suited to experienced hobbyists due to its size and temperament.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended. Bodianus izuensis requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament and Compatibility: This wrasse can be semi-aggressive, especially towards smaller or more passive tankmates. It is generally compatible with other robust fish but caution is advised when housing with smaller, timid species. Avoid keeping with invertebrates that may be viewed as prey.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, Bodianus izuensis thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality frozen or prepared marine fish foods.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory. The aquarium should have plenty of live rock for hiding and foraging.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef conditions is ideal to keep the fish comfortable and healthy.
Placement: Mid to lower levels of the tank are preferred. Provide caves and crevices within the rockwork to allow the fish to retreat when stressed.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef compatible, Bodianus izuensis may prey on smaller invertebrates such as shrimps and small crabs.
Origin: Western Pacific Ocean.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
