Bodianus mesothorax, commonly known as the Split-Level Wrasse, is a visually stunning marine fish prized for its vibrant colouration and active behaviour. This species is suitable for experienced marine aquarists due to its specific care requirements and temperament.
Appearance: The Bodianus mesothorax displays a distinctive colour pattern with a sharp division between the dark upper body and the bright orange lower body, making it a captivating addition to any marine aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This wrasse requires a mature aquarium with stable water parameters and plenty of live rock for hiding and foraging.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards other wrasses or similar-shaped fish. Best kept singly or in a large tank with ample space to reduce aggression. Compatible with other robust species but caution is advised when housing with smaller, timid fish.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and chopped seafood. Supplement with specialised marine pellets or flakes to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and territory. The aquarium should be well-aquascaped with live rock to offer hiding spots and reduce stress.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity around 1.023-1.025 SG.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, the Bodianus mesothorax may prey on small invertebrates such as shrimps and crabs. Monitor closely if housed in reef setups.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches) in captivity.
