The Humpback Grouper (Cromileptes altivelis) is a visually captivating marine fish prized for its unique body shape and gentle nature compared to other groupers. This medium-sized specimen can make a fascinating addition to a large, well-established marine aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a suitably large environment to thrive.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but may exhibit territorial behaviour towards smaller fish or conspecifics. Best kept with similarly sized or larger tank mates. Avoid housing with very small or timid species.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as chopped seafood, crustaceans, and specialised marine pellets to ensure optimal health.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 300 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial stress. Provide plenty of rockwork and hiding places to mimic natural reef environments.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow is preferred to replicate natural reef conditions without causing stress.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 45 cm in length.
With proper care, the Humpback Grouper can be a rewarding and impressive addition to a marine aquarium, offering both beauty and interesting behaviour.
