The Humpback Grouper (Cromileptes altivelis) is a visually captivating marine fish prized for its unique body shape and graceful movements. This species features a prominent hump on its back, giving it a distinctive silhouette that stands out in any marine aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. The Humpback Grouper requires stable water conditions and a well-maintained environment to thrive.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards smaller or more passive tankmates. Careful selection of compatible species is essential.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as live or frozen crustaceans, fish fillets, and specialised carnivore pellets to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is recommended to maintain water quality and simulate natural habitat.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork and hiding places to establish territories and reduce stress. Avoid overcrowding to minimise aggression.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 45 cm (18 inches) in captivity, though smaller specimens are available for home aquariums.
Due to their size and temperament, Humpback Groupers are best suited to experienced marine aquarists who can provide the necessary space and care.
