Heniochus singularius, commonly known as the singular bannerfish, is a captivating large butterflyfish prized for its distinctive black and white pattern and elongated dorsal fin. This species is a peaceful addition to a mature marine aquarium and is best suited for experienced hobbyists due to its specific care needs.
Temperament and Compatibility: Heniochus singularius is generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar-shaped fish. It coexists well with other non-aggressive species and is suitable for reef aquariums with caution, as it may nip at coral polyps or small invertebrates.
Diet: This butterflyfish thrives on a varied diet including high-quality frozen and live foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplementing with marine algae and specialised prepared diets helps maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 45 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space. The aquarium should be well-established with stable water parameters, moderate water flow, and ample hiding places created by live rock formations.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires consistent water quality and a balanced diet to prevent nutritional deficiencies.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef environments is ideal to keep the fish comfortable and active.
Origin and Size: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, Heniochus singularius can grow up to 25 cm in length.
