Chaetodon zanzibarensis, commonly known as the Zanzibar Butterflyfish, is a visually captivating species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. This small butterflyfish displays a distinctive pattern and vibrant colours that make it a standout addition to a mature reef or fish-only marine tank.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in larger tanks.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and specialised marine fish pellets. Supplement with algae and live rock grazing opportunities to mimic natural feeding behaviour.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. May nip at coral polyps or sessile invertebrates; suitable for fish-only or well-established reef tanks with robust corals.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are recommended to replicate natural reef conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and grazing. Ensure stable water parameters and avoid aggressive tank mates.
