Chaetodon striatus, commonly known as the Striated Butterflyfish, is a visually captivating species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. This large butterflyfish features bold vertical stripes across its body, making it a standout addition to mature reef or fish-only tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but may show territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in larger tanks.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with algae-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide sufficient swimming space and territory.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, they may nip at coral polyps or clam mantles, so caution is advised in sensitive reef setups.
Lighting & Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate water flow are suitable to replicate their natural environment.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium, with plenty of hiding spots and open swimming areas.
Origin: Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea.
Maximum Size: Up to 18 cm (7 inches) in length.
Providing a stable environment with regular water changes and a balanced diet will help maintain the health and vibrancy of this species. Avoid aggressive tank mates and ensure the aquarium is mature with plenty of live rock for grazing.
