Chaetodon semilarvatus, commonly known as the Semilarvatus Butterflyfish, is a visually stunning species prized for its bright yellow coloration and intricate blue lines. This medium-sized butterflyfish is a captivating addition to large marine aquariums, especially those with established reef systems.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a mature aquarium environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in spacious tanks.
Diet: Omnivorous. Requires a varied diet including high-quality frozen foods, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets formulated for butterflyfish. Supplement with marine algae and coral polyps where possible.
Minimum Tank Size: 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) or larger to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, they may nip at coral polyps and small invertebrates, so careful monitoring is advised in reef setups.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Ensure stable water quality with regular maintenance.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. A well-established tank with mature live rock is recommended to support natural foraging behaviour.
Origin: Native to the Red Sea and adjacent waters.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
Due to their specialised dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality, the Semilarvatus Butterflyfish is best suited for aquarists with some experience in marine fish care. Regular observation and a varied diet will help maintain their health and vibrant colours.
