Chaetodon mertensii, commonly known as the Mertens’ Butterflyfish, is a visually captivating species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. This small butterflyfish displays intricate patterns and vibrant colours, making it a standout addition to mature reef or fish-only tanks.
Care Level: Moderate. Suitable for aquarists with some experience in maintaining stable marine environments.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in larger tanks. Compatible with other non-aggressive fish but caution is advised when housing with delicate invertebrates.
Diet: Omnivorous. Requires a varied diet including marine algae, high-quality frozen or live foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised butterflyfish preparations. Regular feeding is essential to maintain health.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territory. Well-established aquariums with live rock for grazing and hiding places are recommended.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. May nip at coral polyps and sessile invertebrates, so reef placement should be carefully considered.
