Chaetodon mertensii, commonly known as Mertens’ Butterflyfish, is a visually captivating species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. This medium-sized butterflyfish displays a distinctive pattern of black and white markings with subtle yellow accents, making it a standout addition to mature reef tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-maintained environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in larger tanks.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including high-quality frozen mysis, brine shrimp, marine algae, and specialised prepared foods designed for butterflyfish.
Minimum Tank Size: 150 litres (40 gallons) or larger to allow sufficient swimming space and territory.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, they may nip at coral polyps or clam mantles, especially if underfed.
Lighting & Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate water flow are suitable to mimic their natural habitat.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Ensure the tank is mature and stable before introduction.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches).
Due to their specialised dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality, Mertens’ Butterflyfish are recommended for experienced marine aquarists. Regular observation and a varied diet will help maintain their health and vibrant colours.
