Pygoplites diacanthus (Pacific) is a visually stunning marine angelfish prized for its vivid orange and blue vertical stripes and distinctive black markings. This large variant can reach up to 20 cm in length, making it a striking centrepiece for mature marine aquariums.
Care Level: This species requires an experienced keeper due to its specific dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality. A minimum tank size of 250 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally semi-aggressive, Pygoplites diacanthus can be territorial, especially towards other angelfish. It is best housed singly or as a mated pair in a well-established reef or fish-only system. Avoid housing with overly aggressive species or very small peaceful fish.
Diet: Omnivorous, this angelfish thrives on a varied diet including marine algae, spirulina, mysis shrimp, and specialised angelfish preparations. Regular feeding of meaty and plant-based foods supports vibrant colouration and health.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While it may nip at sessile invertebrates such as corals and clams, individual behaviour varies. Monitor closely if kept in reef tanks.
Environmental Requirements: Maintain stable water parameters with temperatures between 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow. Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter.
Origin: Pacific Ocean.
