The Paracanthurus hepatus, commonly known as the Regal Tang or Blue Tang, is a visually stunning marine fish prized for its vibrant blue body and distinctive black markings. This large variant is suitable for spacious marine aquariums and is best kept by aquarists with some experience due to its active nature and specific care needs.
Temperament and Compatibility: Regal Tangs are generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar-shaped tangs. They coexist well with a variety of other fish species, making them a popular choice for community reef tanks. Avoid housing multiple tangs of the same species unless the tank is very large.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, Paracanthurus hepatus thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality prepared foods such as spirulina flakes, mysis shrimp, and specialised tang pellets to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space. Stable water parameters with good filtration and regular water changes are essential to maintain health.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is suitable, replicating natural reef conditions. Moderate to strong water flow helps mimic their natural environment and supports their active swimming behaviour.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Open swimming areas are also important to accommodate their active nature.
Reef Safety: Generally considered reef safe with caution, as they may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or coral polyps, especially if underfed.
With proper care, the Regal Tang is a captivating addition to a marine aquarium, offering vibrant colour and dynamic movement.
