The Paracanthurus hepatus, commonly known as the Regal Tang or Blue Tang, is a stunning addition to any large marine aquarium. This extra large specimen displays the species’ iconic vibrant blue body with black markings and a bright yellow tail, making it a visually striking centerpiece.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-maintained environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar tang species. Best kept singly or in a large tank with plenty of space.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including marine algae, spirulina, high-quality flake or pellet foods, and occasional meaty treats such as mysis shrimp to ensure optimal health and vibrant colouration.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 150 litres (40 US gallons) recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce stress.
Reef Compatibility: Yes, with caution. Generally reef safe but may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or coral polyps, especially if underfed.
Lighting & Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal to keep the fish active and healthy.
Placement: Mid to upper water column swimmers. Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots to reduce stress.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in captivity.
Regular water changes and stable water parameters are essential for the health of this species. Avoid sudden changes in water chemistry and ensure a well-established aquarium before introducing this fish.
