The Tridacna maxima (Yellow-Gold) is a visually striking clam species prized for its vibrant yellow-gold mantle and intricate patterns. Reaching around 13cm in size, this clam is a captivating addition to mature reef aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and strong lighting to thrive.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic, relying on symbiotic zooxanthellae within its tissues. Supplementary feeding of phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can support growth and health.
Lighting Requirements: High-intensity lighting such as metal halide, T5, or strong LED setups is essential to support photosynthesis.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water movement is preferred to avoid tissue damage while ensuring nutrient exchange.
Placement: Position on a stable, well-lit substrate or rockwork where it can receive ample light without risk of falling or being overshadowed by other corals.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Reef safe and compatible with most peaceful tank inhabitants. Avoid housing with aggressive fish or invertebrates that may nip at the mantle.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to maintain stable water quality and accommodate growth.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Typically up to 20cm in captivity, though growth rates vary.
Regular monitoring of water parameters, including calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium, is important to support shell growth and overall health. Avoid sudden changes in lighting or water chemistry to prevent stress.
