The Tridacna maxima (Pink-Purple) is a captivating small clam species prized for its vibrant pink and purple mantle colours. At approximately 4cm, this clam is a beautiful addition to mature reef aquariums, offering both aesthetic appeal and ecological benefits.
Care and Husbandry: This species thrives under moderate to strong lighting, ideally provided by LED or T5 aquarium lights designed for reef tanks. Stable water parameters are essential, with a temperature range of 24-28°C, salinity between 1.023-1.025 SG, and a pH of 8.1-8.4. Moderate water flow is recommended to ensure proper gas exchange without causing stress.
Feeding is generally not required as Tridacna maxima clams rely heavily on their symbiotic zooxanthellae algae for nutrition. However, occasional supplementation with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can support growth and health, especially in lower light conditions.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: This clam is reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. Avoid housing with aggressive fish or invertebrates that may nip at the mantle. Placement should be on a stable substrate or rockwork where the clam can securely attach and receive adequate light.
Additional Notes: Due to their sensitivity to water quality fluctuations, it is recommended for hobbyists with some marine aquarium experience. Regular monitoring of calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels will support shell growth and overall clam health.
