Tridacna maxima (Pink-Purple) is a visually striking small clam species prized for its vibrant pink and purple mantle colours. At approximately 5cm, this clam is a captivating addition to mature reef aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate care is required to maintain optimal health. These clams thrive in stable, well-established reef tanks with pristine water quality.
Feeding: Tridacna maxima primarily relies on photosynthesis via symbiotic zooxanthellae but benefits from supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or specialised clam foods to support growth.
Lighting Requirements: High-intensity lighting such as T5, LED, or metal halide is essential to support photosynthesis. Position the clam where it receives strong, direct light.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is ideal to ensure nutrient exchange without causing stress or damage to the delicate mantle.
Placement: Place on a stable, hard substrate such as rock or specialised clam plates. Avoid areas with strong currents or direct contact with aggressive neighbours.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: This species is reef safe and compatible with most reef inhabitants. However, avoid housing with predatory fish or invertebrates that may nip at the mantle.
Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 100 litres is recommended to maintain stable water parameters and adequate space.
Regular monitoring of calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels is important to support shell growth. Maintain temperature between 24-27°C and stable salinity around 1.025 SG.
With proper care, Tridacna maxima can be a long-lived and visually rewarding member of your marine aquarium.
