The Blue Tridacna maxima, commonly known as the Maxima Clam, is a captivating addition to any mature marine aquarium. Originating from the Pacific, this ultra variant displays vibrant blue hues that enhance the visual appeal of reef setups.
Care Level: Moderate – requires stable water parameters and strong lighting.
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic, relying on symbiotic zooxanthellae algae within its tissues. Supplementary feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can support health and growth.
Lighting: High-intensity lighting is essential to support photosynthesis. LED or T5 lighting systems with a PAR value suitable for clams are recommended.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow helps maintain cleanliness without stressing the clam.
Placement: Position on a stable substrate or rockwork where it receives ample light and is protected from strong currents or aggressive tank mates.
Compatibility: Reef safe and compatible with most peaceful invertebrates and fish. Avoid housing with clam predators such as certain wrasses or angelfish.
Tank Size: A minimum of 100 litres is recommended to maintain stable water conditions.
Regular monitoring of water parameters, including calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium, is crucial to support shell growth and overall health.
