The Blue Maxima Clam (Tridacna maxima) is a visually striking giant clam species prized for its vibrant blue mantle and intricate patterns. Originating from the Pacific Ocean, this ultra variant reaches around 11cm in size, making it a manageable and attractive addition to mature reef aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate – requires stable water parameters and strong lighting to thrive.
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic, relying on symbiotic zooxanthellae within its tissues. Supplementary feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can support health, especially in lower light conditions.
Lighting: High-intensity lighting is essential to support photosynthesis. Metal halide, T5, or high-output LED systems are recommended.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is ideal to prevent mantle damage while ensuring nutrient exchange.
Placement: Position on a stable substrate or rockwork in a well-lit area of the tank. Avoid direct strong currents and ensure it is not shaded by corals or décor.
Compatibility & Reef Safety: Reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. Avoid housing with predatory fish or invertebrates that may nip at the mantle.
Tank Size: A minimum of 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) is recommended to maintain stable water quality and accommodate growth.
Regular monitoring of calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels is important to support shell growth. Maintain pristine water conditions with stable temperature, salinity, and nutrient levels.
