Zoanthus spp. (Fiji-Tonga) are a captivating group of soft coral polyps prized for their bright colours and ease of care in marine reef aquariums. Originating from the Fiji and Tonga regions, these tiny polyps add vibrant texture and movement to your reef display.
Care Level: These corals are considered easy to moderate to care for, suitable for hobbyists with some reef experience. They adapt well to a range of lighting and flow conditions but perform best under moderate settings.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is ideal, such as LED or T5 fixtures providing a balanced spectrum. Avoid intense direct light which can cause bleaching.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is recommended to keep the polyps clean and healthy without causing excessive stress or polyp retraction.
Placement: Place Zoanthus spp. on stable rockwork in areas with moderate light and flow. Ensure adequate spacing from aggressive corals to prevent chemical warfare or overgrowth.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: These polyps are generally reef safe with adequate spacing from neighbouring corals. They coexist well with most reef inhabitants but can release toxins if stressed, so careful placement is advised.
Diet: Zoanthus spp. primarily rely on photosynthesis via their symbiotic zooxanthellae but will benefit from occasional feeding of fine particulate foods such as phytoplankton or coral-specific liquid foods.
Additional Notes: Handle with care as some Zoanthus species can produce palytoxin, a potent toxin harmful to humans. Always wear gloves and avoid contact with open wounds when fragging or handling.
