Abudefduf sexfasciatus, commonly known as the Large Sergeant Major, is a visually striking damsel fish native to tropical Indo-Pacific reefs. Recognisable by its distinctive black vertical bands over a bright blue and yellow body, this species adds vibrant colour and dynamic movement to a marine aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species can be territorial and requires a well-established aquarium with ample space.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Large Sergeant Major is semi-aggressive and may display territorial behaviour, especially in smaller tanks. It is best housed with similarly sized or larger robust species. Avoid keeping with very peaceful or slow-moving fish to reduce stress and aggression.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including high-quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and algae-based foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and reduce territorial disputes.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. This species does not have special lighting requirements but benefits from a stable, well-filtered environment.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium. Provide plenty of live rock for shelter and territory establishment.
Origin: Tropical Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
Additional Notes: Regular water quality monitoring and stable parameters are essential. This species is not considered reef safe as it may nip at corals and invertebrates.
