Abudefduf sexfasciatus, commonly known as the Sixband Sergeant, is a visually captivating damsel fish native to tropical Indo-Pacific reefs. This extra large specimen displays the characteristic six vertical black bands on a pale body, making it a striking focal point in marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a suitably sized aquarium due to its territorial nature and active swimming behaviour.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Sixband Sergeant is semi-aggressive and territorial, especially in confined spaces. It is best housed with other robust fish species and may not be suitable for peaceful reef tanks with delicate invertebrates or corals. Compatibility with other damsels can be challenging unless the aquarium is large enough to provide territories.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including high-quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with algae-based foods to mimic natural grazing behaviour.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) is recommended to accommodate its active swimming and territorial needs.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents will help maintain fish health and encourage natural behaviour.
Placement: Provide ample hiding places using live rock formations to establish territories and reduce aggression. This species is best kept in fish-only or robust mixed-species marine tanks rather than delicate reef setups.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
