Cephalopholis urodeta, commonly referred to as the Coral Hind, is a small species of grouper prized for its vibrant colours and distinctive patterning. This marine fish is best suited to experienced hobbyists due to its specific care requirements and territorial nature.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and a mature aquarium environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: Cephalopholis urodeta is moderately territorial and can be aggressive towards smaller or similarly sized tank mates. It is recommended to keep this species with robust, non-aggressive fish. Avoid housing with very small or delicate species.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as chopped seafood, crustaceans, and high-quality frozen or live feeds. Regular feeding 2-3 times daily is ideal to maintain health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and territories. The aquarium should be well-decorated with live rock to offer ample hiding places and ambush points.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While not inherently reef destructive, this species may prey on smaller invertebrates and fish, so it is not fully reef safe.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Ensure good water quality with stable parameters.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in captivity.
