Zenopontonia rex is a small, strikingly patterned shrimp species renowned for its commensal lifestyle, typically found living on sea cucumbers in the wild. This fascinating invertebrate adds both interest and natural behaviour to marine reef tanks.
Care and Husbandry: Zenopontonia rex requires a well-established marine aquarium with stable water parameters. A minimum tank size of 30 litres is recommended to provide sufficient space and environmental stability. This shrimp thrives in tanks where its host sea cucumber is present, as it relies on this symbiotic relationship for shelter and feeding opportunities.
Feeding: This species is omnivorous and will feed on detritus, micro-organisms, and leftover food particles in the aquarium. Supplementary feeding with finely chopped meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or specialised invertebrate pellets will support its health and longevity.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Zenopontonia rex is peaceful and reef safe, making it suitable for community reef tanks. It coexists well with other invertebrates and non-aggressive fish species. However, care should be taken to avoid housing with predatory fish or aggressive crustaceans that may harm it.
Water Conditions: Maintain stable marine parameters with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, and moderate water flow to mimic natural conditions. Lighting requirements are standard for reef aquariums and do not require specialised intensity.
Adding Zenopontonia rex to your marine aquarium offers a unique glimpse into symbiotic marine relationships and enhances the biodiversity of your reef environment.
