Zebrasoma veliferum, commonly known as the Sailfin Tang, is a visually stunning addition to any large marine aquarium. Recognisable by its large, sail-like dorsal fin and bold vertical stripes, this species is a favourite among aquarists seeking both beauty and personality.
Care Level: Moderate – suitable for aquarists with some experience in maintaining tangs.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards other tangs, especially conspecifics or similar-shaped species. Best kept singly or in a very large tank with ample swimming space.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Feed a varied diet rich in marine algae and seaweed, supplemented with high-quality herbivore pellets and occasional meaty treats.
Minimum Tank Size: 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) or larger to accommodate its active swimming behaviour and territorial needs.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, they may nip at certain soft corals or clam mantles. Monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate to strong water flow mimics their natural reef environment and helps maintain health.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Ensure open swimming areas to accommodate their active nature.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 45 cm (18 inches) in length.
With proper care, the Large Zebrasoma veliferum can thrive and become a captivating focal point in your marine aquarium.
