Tridacna squamosa, commonly known as the Scaly Clam, is a spectacular large clam species prized for its distinctive ridged mantle and vibrant colours. This premium specimen, sized between 16-20cm, is perfect for experienced marine aquarists seeking to enhance their reef tanks with a visually striking invertebrate.
Care and Husbandry: Tridacna squamosa requires stable water parameters typical of mature reef aquariums. Moderate to strong lighting is essential to support the photosynthetic symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) within its tissues. LED or T5 lighting systems are suitable, with a photoperiod of 8-10 hours daily.
Water flow should be moderate to gentle to avoid damaging the delicate mantle but sufficient to prevent detritus accumulation around the clam. Placement should be on a stable, sandy or rubble substrate where the clam can securely attach itself.
Feeding is generally not required as the clam derives most of its nutrition from photosynthesis; however, occasional supplementation with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can be beneficial, especially in lower light conditions.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Tridacna squamosa is reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. Avoid housing with aggressive fish or invertebrates that may nip at the mantle. Regular monitoring of water quality and calcium levels is important to support shell growth.
This clam can reach a maximum size of approximately 30cm in captivity under optimal conditions. A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to accommodate its growth and maintain water quality.
