Tridacna squamosa, commonly known as the Scaly Clam, is a visually striking clam species popular among marine aquarium enthusiasts. Its characteristic scaly mantle and vibrant iridescent colours make it a prized invertebrate for reef tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This clam requires stable water parameters and strong lighting to thrive.
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic, Tridacna squamosa relies on symbiotic zooxanthellae within its tissues for nutrition. Supplementary feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can promote growth and health.
Lighting Requirements: High-intensity lighting is essential to support photosynthesis. LED or metal halide lighting systems are recommended.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is ideal to prevent mantle damage while ensuring adequate nutrient exchange.
Placement: Position the clam on a stable, sandy or rubble substrate in a well-lit area of the aquarium. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or fish that may nip at the mantle.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Generally reef safe, but care should be taken to avoid housing with predatory or aggressive species. The clam is a peaceful invertebrate that coexists well with most reef inhabitants.
Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide stable water conditions.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Can grow up to 30cm in length under optimal conditions.
