The Tridacna maxima (Yellow-Gold) is a stunning small clam species prized for its vivid yellow-gold mantle and intricate patterning. At approximately 7cm in size, this clam is a perfect addition to mature reef aquariums where it can thrive under appropriate conditions.
Care Requirements: This clam requires moderate to strong lighting to support its symbiotic zooxanthellae algae, which provide much of its nutritional needs through photosynthesis. Ensure stable water parameters with a temperature range of 24-28°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, and calcium levels maintained around 400-450 ppm to support shell growth.
Feeding: While primarily photosynthetic, Tridacna maxima can benefit from supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or specialised clam foods, especially in lower light conditions.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: This species is reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or fish that may nip at the mantle. Provide a secure substrate or rock placement to prevent dislodgement by tank inhabitants or water flow.
Water Flow and Placement: Moderate water flow is ideal to ensure nutrient exchange without causing stress. Position the clam where it receives ample light but is protected from direct strong currents.
With proper care, the Yellow-Gold Tridacna maxima can be a long-lived and visually captivating member of your marine aquarium.
