The Blue Maxima Clam (Tridacna maxima) is a captivating and colourful giant clam species native to the Pacific Ocean. This ultra variant, measuring approximately 6cm, is prized for its vibrant blue mantle and intricate patterns, making it a prized addition to mature reef aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate care is required to maintain optimal health. These clams depend heavily on strong lighting to support their symbiotic zooxanthellae algae, which provide much of their nutrition.
Lighting Requirements: High-intensity lighting such as metal halide, T5, or strong LED systems is essential to ensure proper photosynthesis and vibrant coloration.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is recommended to prevent sediment accumulation on the clam’s mantle while avoiding excessive turbulence that may cause stress.
Placement: Position the clam on a stable, sandy or rubble substrate in a well-lit area of the tank. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or fish that may nip at the mantle.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic, but supplemental feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can support growth and health, especially in lower light conditions.
Compatibility & Reef Safety: Reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. Avoid housing with predatory fish or invertebrates that may harm the clam.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 100 litres is recommended to provide stable water parameters and adequate space.
Origin: Pacific Ocean.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 15cm in captivity under optimal conditions.
