The Blue Maxima Clam (Tridacna maxima) is a popular choice among marine aquarists seeking to add vibrant colour and natural filtration to their reef tanks. This specimen, approximately 9cm in size, displays a brilliant blue mantle that adds a striking focal point to any mature marine aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate. This clam requires stable water parameters and moderate to strong lighting to thrive.
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic, relying on symbiotic zooxanthellae within its tissues. Supplementary feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can support growth, especially in lower light conditions.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Generally reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. Avoid housing with clam-eating fish or invertebrates. Placement away from aggressive corals is recommended to prevent mantle damage.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 100 litres is advised to ensure stable water quality and adequate space. Provide moderate to strong lighting such as T5, LED, or metal halide to support photosynthesis. Moderate water flow is preferred to prevent sediment accumulation on the clam’s mantle but avoid strong currents that may cause stress.
Placement: Position the clam on a stable rock or sandy substrate where it can receive ample light and moderate water movement. Ensure it is not shaded by other corals or decorations.
With proper care, the Blue Maxima Clam can be a long-lived and visually stunning addition to your reef aquarium.
