The Black Tiger Clam (Tridacna maxima) is a smaller species of giant clam prized for its distinctive black and white striped mantle pattern. At approximately 8cm, this clam is suitable for established marine reef aquariums where lighting and water quality are carefully maintained.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and strong lighting to support its symbiotic zooxanthellae algae.
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic, relying on intense lighting to sustain its symbiotic algae. Supplementary feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can promote growth and health.
Compatibility & Reef Safety: Generally reef safe and peaceful. Avoid housing with aggressive fish or invertebrates that may nip at the mantle. Placement away from corals that may sting or overshadow is recommended.
Lighting & Water Flow: Requires high-intensity lighting such as metal halide or strong LED systems to thrive. Moderate water flow is ideal to ensure nutrient exchange without causing mantle damage.
Placement: Securely place on a stable substrate or rockwork where it can attach firmly. Avoid areas with strong direct current or sediment accumulation.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 15cm in captivity, though growth rates vary.
Minimum Tank Size: 100 litres recommended to maintain stable water conditions and adequate space.
Regular monitoring of water parameters, especially calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium, is essential to support shell growth. Avoid sudden changes in lighting or water chemistry to prevent stress.
