Tridacna gigas, or the Giant Clam, is one of the largest and most impressive clams available for marine aquariums. This 13-15cm specimen is a captivating addition to well-established reef tanks, prized for its vibrant mantle colours and unique appearance.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Giant clams require stable water parameters and strong lighting to support their symbiotic zooxanthellae.
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic, relying on intense lighting for their symbiotic algae. Supplementary feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can be beneficial, especially in lower light conditions.
Compatibility: Reef safe with caution. While generally peaceful, they can be sensitive to aggressive tank mates and require protection from predatory fish and invertebrates.
Lighting Requirements: Very high. Metal halide or high-output LED lighting is recommended to meet their photosynthetic needs.
Water Flow: Moderate to strong water movement is ideal to ensure proper gas exchange and prevent detritus accumulation on the clam’s mantle.
Placement: Place on a stable, sandy or rubble substrate where the clam can attach securely. Avoid placing near corals that may sting or overshadow it.
Tank Size: Minimum 500 litres recommended due to the potential size and environmental needs of Tridacna gigas.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Can grow up to 120cm in the wild, but growth in captivity is slower and depends on care.
