The Tridacna Crocea Clam is a small but spectacular giant clam species prized for its brilliant colours and intricate mantle patterns. At 4cm, this clam is suitable for established reef tanks where lighting and water quality are carefully maintained.
Care Level: Moderate – requires stable water parameters and strong lighting.
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic, relying on symbiotic zooxanthellae within its tissues. Supplementary feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can promote growth and health.
Compatibility: Reef safe with caution. Generally peaceful and compatible with most reef inhabitants, but avoid predatory invertebrates and fish that may nip at the mantle.
Lighting: High-intensity lighting is essential to support photosynthesis. LED or metal halide lighting systems are recommended.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow to ensure nutrient exchange without causing mantle damage.
Placement: Position on a stable substrate or rockwork where it can receive direct light and avoid sediment accumulation. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or animals that may harm the clam.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 100 litres is advised to maintain stable water conditions and accommodate growth.
Regular monitoring of calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels is important to support shell growth. Maintain pristine water quality with low nitrates and phosphates.
