The Moon Wrasse (Thalassoma lunare) is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts due to its vivid colours and lively personality. This medium-sized wrasse is native to the Indo-Pacific region and is known for its distinctive crescent-shaped markings and bright green, blue, and yellow hues.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. The Moon Wrasse requires stable water conditions and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards smaller or more passive fish, so compatibility should be considered carefully.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with marine pellets or flakes formulated for carnivorous fish.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Reef Safe: With Caution. While generally reef compatible, the Moon Wrasse may prey on small invertebrates such as shrimps and small crabs, so caution is advised in reef setups containing delicate invertebrates.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. No special lighting needs.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is preferred to mimic natural reef conditions.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium. Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and territory establishment.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (8 inches) in length.
Ensure a secure lid on the aquarium as Moon Wrasses are known jumpers. Regular water changes and stable water parameters will help maintain their health and vibrant colours.
